What is Budesonide

Budesonide is a glucocorticoid used in the management of asthma, the treatment of various skin disorders, and allergic rhinitis. The extended release oral tablet, marketed as Uceris, was FDA approved on January 14, 2013 for the management of ulcerative colitis. Budesonide is provided as a mixture of two epimers (22R and 22S). Interestingly, the 22R form is two times more active than the 22S epimer. The two forms do not interconvert.

Budesonide mechanism of action

Budesonide is an anti-inflammatory corticosteroid that exhibits potent glucocorticoid activity and weak mineralocorticoid activity. The precise mechanism of corticosteroid actions on inflammation in asthma, Crohn’s disease, or ulcerative colitis is not known. Inflammation is an important component in the pathogenesis of asthma. Corticosteroids have been shown to have a wide range of inhibitory activities against multiple cell types (eg, mast cells, eosinophils, neutrophils, macrophages, and lymphocytes) and mediators (eg, histamine, eicosanoids, leukotrienes, and cytokines) involved in allergic and non-allergic-mediated inflammation. These anti-inflammatory actions of corticosteroids may contribute to their efficacy in the aforementioned diseases. Because budesonide undergoes significant first-pass elimination, the both oral preparations are formulated as an extended release tablet. As a result, budesonide release is delyaed until exposure to a pH . 7 in the small intestine.

The oral capsule is used for the treatment of mild to moderate active Crohn’s disease. The oral tablet is used for induction of remission in patients with active, mild to moderate ulcerative colitis. The oral inhalation formulation is used for the treatment of asthma, non-infectious rhinitis (including hay fever and other allergies), and for treatment and prevention of nasal polyposis.

What is a Symbicort?

Symbicort is an anti-inflammatory and bronchodilator combination drug for inhalation use. Symbicort is available in the form of a metered-dose powder for inhalation, consisting of white or almost white granules, as a rule, of round shape (dosage of 80/4.5 μg and 160/4.5 μg – 60 or 120 doses in plastic turbuhaler inhalers, in a carton pack 1 inhaler; dosage 320/9 mcg – 60 doses in plastic inhalers “turbuhaler”, in a carton pack one inhaler).

The effect of Symbicort is based on the effect of 2 active ingredients – formoterol and budesonide. Budesonide belongs to the GCS group. In the composition of the drug substance has an anti-inflammatory effect on the bronchi, thereby reducing the symptoms of bronchial asthma and the frequency of attacks. Budesonide reduces swelling of the bronchial mucous membranes, slowing the production of mucus and sputum.

Formoterol is an adrenergic beta2 receptor antagonist. When the substance is exposed to the body, the smooth muscles of the bronchi relax, which has a positive effect in the treatment of COPD. Formoterol is characterized by fast and persistent action. The active components of Symbicort Turbuhalera help reduce the frequency of asthma attacks and improve the functionality of the bronchi.

What is Rhinocort Aqua?

Rhinocort Aqua is a nasal spray containing budesonide, a corticosteroid. This prevents the release of substances in the body that cause inflammation. Rhinocort Aqua Nasal Spray is used to treat stuffy nose, sneezing and runny nose caused by seasonal or year-round allergies.

Before using Rhinocort Aqua, tell your doctor if you are sick or have had any infection. Also tell your doctor if you have liver disease, glaucoma or cataract, herpes simplex infection of your eyes, tuberculosis, ulcers or ulcers in the nose, or if you have recently had an injury or nose surgery.

It can take up to 2 weeks of using Rhinocort Aqua before your symptoms improve. For best results, continue to use the drug as directed. Talk to your doctor if your symptoms do not improve after a week of treatment.

Budesonide can lower blood cells that help your body fight infections. Avoid being near sick people or having infections. Call your doctor for preventive treatment if you are exposed to chicken pox or measles. These conditions can be serious or even fatal for people who use Rhinocort Aqua.

Avoid getting Rhinocort Aqua in the eyes. If this happens, rinse with water and call your doctor. Steroid drugs can affect growth in children. Talk with your doctor if you think your child does not grow at a normal rate when using Rhinocort Aqua.

What is Pulmicort?

Pulmicort contains budesonide, a corticosteroid that prevents the release of substances in the body that cause inflammation. Pulmicort is used to prevent asthma attacks in adults and children who are at least 6 years old.

Do not use Pulmicort for asthma that has already begun. Pulmicort is not a life-saving medicine. It will not work fast enough to treat an asthma attack. Use only fast-acting inhaled medicine to treat asthma attacks.

You should not use this medicine if you have a strong allergy to milk proteins. See your doctor if asthma symptoms do not improve after using Pulmicort for 2 weeks.

Your Pulmicort dosage may change if you have surgery, are ill, are under stress, or have recently had asthma attacks. Talk with your doctor if any of your asthma medications do not seem to work, as well as treating or preventing asthma.

If you are also using an oral steroid, do not stop using the steroid suddenly or you may experience unpleasant withdrawal symptoms. Talk to your doctor about taking less and less steroid before completely stopping it.
