What is Dronedarone
Dronedarone is a sinus rhythm controller for management of paroxysmal or persistent atrial fibrillation. Classified as a Class III antiarrhythmic but displays properties of all four Vaughan-Williams classes, dronedarone blocks a multitude of channels (sodium, potassium, calcium), and demonstrates antiadrenergic properties. Chemically, it is a benzofuran derivative. FDA approved on July 1, 2009.
Dronedarone mechanism of action
The antiarrhythmic effect of dronedarone may be due to at least two major actions. It prolongs the duration of action potential and refractory period in myocardial tissue via inhibition of sodium and potassium channels. Via inhibition of calcium channels and blockage of beta1-adrenergic receptors, a decrease in AV conduction and sinus node function can be observed. Dronedarone can also cause an increase in blood pressure by inhibition of alpha1-adrenergic receptors.

What is Multaq?
Multaq is an antiarrhythmic drug that affects the rhythm of heart contractions. Multaq helps maintain a normal heartbeat in people with life-threatening cardiac atrium rhythm disturbances (upper chambers of the heart that allow blood to flow into the heart) and risk factors such as diabetes, high blood pressure, a history of stroke, or over 70 years.
Multaq is used to treat certain heart rhythm disorders caused by atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter. Multaq is provided to reduce the need for hospitalization due to these heart diseases. Do not stop taking Multaq without first talking to your doctor. Stopping suddenly can worsen your condition.
You should not use Multaq if you have recently been hospitalized for heart failure, or if you have symptoms of heart failure (shortness of breath, swelling, rapid weight gain). You should also not use this medicine if you have a “persistent” heart rhythm disorder called atrial fibrillation. Multaq can double the risk of death if you have any of these heart diseases.
Multaq can harm an unborn baby or cause birth defects. Do not use dronedarone if you are pregnant. You should not breastfeed while using this medication. You should not use Multaq if you have severe liver disease or some serious heart disease, such as an AV block or sick sinus syndrome (if you do not have a pacemaker). You should not use Multaq if you have a history of very slow heartbeats, or if you have ever used amiodarone, and this caused you to have lung problems or liver problems.
There are many other drugs that can cause serious medical problems if you take them with Multaq. You may need to stop taking certain medications while you are taking Multaq. Tell your doctor about all other medicines that you use.
