What is Escitalopram
Escitalopram, the iS /i-enantiomer of citalopram, belongs to a class of antidepressant agents known as selective serotonin-reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). Despite distinct structural differences between compounds in this class, SSRIs possess similar pharmacological activity. As with other antidepressant agents, several weeks of therapy may be required before a clinical effect is seen. SSRIs are potent inhibitors of neuronal serotonin reuptake. They have little to no effect on norepinephrine or dopamine reuptake and do not antagonize alpha;- or beta;-adrenergic, dopamine D sub2 /sub or histamine H sub1 /sub receptors. During acute use, SSRIs block serotonin reuptake and increase serotonin stimulation of somatodendritic 5-HT sub1A /sub and terminal autoreceptors. Chronic use leads to desensitization of somatodendritic 5-HT sub1A /sub and terminal autoreceptors. The overall clinical effect of increased mood and decreased anxiety is thought to be due to adaptive changes in neuronal function that leads to enhanced serotonergic neurotransmission. Side effects include dry mouth, nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, sexual dysfunction and headache. Side effects generally occur within the first two weeks of therapy and are usually less severe and frequent than those observed with tricyclic antidepressants. Escitalopram may be used to treat major depressive disorder (MDD) and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD).
Escitalopram mechanism of action
The antidepressant, antiobsessive-compulsive, and antibulimic actions of escitalopram are presumed to be linked to its inhibition of CNS neuronal uptake of serotonin. Escitalopram blocks the reuptake of serotonin at the serotonin reuptake pump of the neuronal membrane, enhancing the actions of serotonin on 5HT sub1A /sub autoreceptors. SSRIs bind with significantly less affinity to histamine, acetylcholine, and norepinephrine receptors than tricyclic antidepressant drugs.

What is Lexapro?
Lexapro (escitalopram) is an antidepressant that belongs to the group of drugs that cause certain serotonin reuptake inhibitors. The way in which escitalopram works is still not fully understood. This is believed to have a positive effect on the connection between the nerve cells in the central nervous system and / or restores the chemical balance in the brain. Lexapro is used to treat anxiety in adults. Lexapro is also used to treat major depressive disorders in adults and adolescents who are at least 12 years old.
You should not use Lexapro if you are also taking pimozide, or if you are treating with an injection of methylene blue. Do not use Lexapro if you have taken a MAO inhibitor in the last 14 days. Dangerous drug interactions can occur.
Some young people have thoughts about suicide when they first take an antidepressant. Your doctor should check your progress with regular visits while you use Lexapro. Your family or other caregivers should be aware of changes in your mood or symptoms.
