What is Levonorgestrel

A synthetic progestational hormone with actions similar to those of progesterone and about twice as potent as its racemic or (+-)-isomer (norgestrel). It is used for contraception, control of menstrual disorders, and treatment of endometriosis. It is usually supplied in a racemic mixture (Norgestrel, 6533-00-2). Only the levonorgestrel isomer is active. Levonorgestrel is marketed mostly as a combination oral contraceptive under several brand names such as Alesse, Triphasil, and Min-Ovral.

Levonorgestrel mechanism of action

Binds to the progesterone and estrogen receptors. Target cells include the female reproductive tract, the mammary gland, the hypothalamus, and the pituitary. Once bound to the receptor, progestins like levonorgestrel will slow the frequency of release of gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) from the hypothalamus and blunt the pre-ovulatory LH (luteinizing hormone) surge.

What is Plan B?

Plan B tablets contain medicinal levonorgestrel, a female hormone that prevents ovulation (the release of eggs from the ovary). This drug also causes changes in your cervical mucosa and uterus, which complicates the penetration of sperm into the uterus and more difficult for a fertilized egg that attaches to the uterus.

Plan B is used to prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex or giving up other forms of birth control (for example, breaking a condom or not having two or more birth control pills).

Do not use Plan B if you are already pregnant. Plan B will not end a pregnancy that has already begun (a fertilized egg is attached to the uterus). Plan B is not intended to be used as a routine form of birth control and should not be used as such. Talk to your doctor about various forms of birth control.
