What is Lorcaserin

Lorcaserin (previously APD-356), a highly selective 5HT2C receptor agonist, is used for the treatment of obesity. It has been shown to reduce body weight and food intake in animal models of obesity, and it is thought that targeting the 5HT2C receptor may alter body weight by regulating satiety. Lorcaserin is marketed as a salt form called Belviq, which is lorcaserin hydrochloride.

Lorcaserin mechanism of action

Although the exact mechanism is unknown, it is believed to involve the selective activation of 5-HT2C receptors in the anorexigenic pro-opiomelanocortin neurons in the arcuate nucleus of the hypothalamus. This results in decreased food intake and satiety by promoting the release of alpha-melanocortin stimulating hormone, which acts on melanocortin-4 receptors.

What is a Belviq?

Belviq is a drug for treating obesity. Approved by the FDA for use in the United States in June 2012. Belviq is used as part of therapy, which involves reducing the caloric intake of food taken by the patient and increasing physical activity. The active ingredient of Belviq is lorcerin, an antagonist of serotonin 5-HT2C receptors. The effect of lorcerin is based on the fact that it blocks hunger, allowing patients to feel more fed from less food. The dosage form of Belviq is a coated tablet, each containing 10 mg of lorcerin hydrochloride, calculated on the basis of lorcerin.

The main active ingredient acts as an antagonist of serotonin receptors. Through cell membranes, lorkaserin enters into a relationship with the hormone serotonin and exerts a neuro-mediator effect on certain parts of the central nervous system. This inhibits the activity of brain areas responsible for the formation and strengthening of hunger. In parallel with this process, there is an activation of the centers that regulate the time when the feeling of satiety arises after food enters the stomach. Thus, the portions can be reduced to a minimum in order to fully saturate the person, and the feeling of fullness comes already in the first minutes after the start of a meal.
