What is Minoxidil
A potent direct-acting peripheral vasodilator (vasodilator agents) that reduces peripheral resistance and produces a fall in blood pressure. (From Martindale, The Extra Pharmacopoeia, 30th ed, p371)
Minoxidil mechanism of action
Minoxidil is thought to promote the survival of human dermal papillary cells (DPCs) or hair cells by activating both extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) and Akt and by preventing cell death by increasing the ratio of BCl sup – /sup 2/Bax. Minoxidil may stimulate the growth of human hairs by prolonging anagen through these proliferative and anti-apoptotic effects on DPCs. Minoxidil, when used as a vasodilator, acts by opening adenosine triphosphate-sensitive potassium channels in vascular smooth muscle cells. This vasodilation may also improve the viability of hair cells or hair follicles.

What is Rogaine?
Rogaine is used to help you restore scalp hair. The exact way minoxidil works is not known. It is possible that it dilates the blood vessels of the scalp, which can improve the function of the hair follicle and stimulate hair growth.
Rogaine will not cause permanent hair growth of the head. You must continue to use the product to maintain hair growth. Do not use Rogaine if the skin on the scalp is damaged, irritated or burned. This may allow more drugs to be absorbed by your body, which can be dangerous.
Do not use Rogaine in any part of your body, except for the scalp. Application to other parts of the body can be dangerous. Do not use other topical preparations on the scalp during treatment with Rogaine, unless the doctor has indicated otherwise.
