What is Montelukast
Montelukast is a leukotriene receptor antagonist (LTRA) used for the maintenance treatment of asthma and to relieve symptoms of seasonal allergies. It is usually administered orally. Montelukast blocks the action of leukotriene D4 on the cysteinyl leukotriene receptor CysLT1 in the lungs and bronchial tubes by binding to it. This reduces the bronchoconstriction otherwise caused by the leukotriene, and results in less inflammation. Because of its method of operation, it is not useful for the treatment of acute asthma attacks. Again because of its very specific locus of operation, it does not interact with other allergy medications such as theophylline. Montelukast is marketed in United States and many other countries by Merck amp; Co. with the brand name Singulair. It is available as oral tablets, chewable tablets, and oral granules. In India and other countries, it is also marketed under the brand name Montair reg;, produced by Indian company Cipla.
Montelukast mechanism of action
Montelukast selectively antagonizes leukotriene D sub4 /sub (LTD sub4 /sub) at the cysteinyl leukotriene receptor, CysLT sub1 /sub, in the human airway. Montelukast inhibits the actions of LTD sub4 /sub at the CysLT sub1 /sub receptor, preventing airway edema, smooth muscle contraction, and enhanced secretion of thick, viscous mucus.

What is Singulair?
Singular selectively inhibits the leukotriene receptors of the epithelium of the bronchopulmonary tissue, making them immune to the action of cysteinyl leukotrienes. Singular prevents bronchospasm, sputum production, increased vascular permeability and an increase in the number of eosinophils. This is due to the fact that cysteinyl leukotrienes are pro-inflammatory mediators. When they bind to receptors, symptoms of asthma and allergic rhinitis appear.
By locking the receptors, the Singular causes bronchial relaxation for 2 hours after ingestion, reduces the content of intracellular and extracellular factors of inflammation in the airways, reduces the reactivity of the bronchi. This he suppresses bronchospasm of various stages (early and late), significantly reduces the concentration of eosinophils.
