What is a Tamiflu?
Tamiflu is an antiviral drug that blocks the effects of influenza A and B viruses in your body. Tamiflu is used to treat flu in people 2 weeks of age and older who have had flu symptoms for 2 days or less. Oseltamivir can also be prescribed for the prevention of influenza in people who are at least 1 year old, who may be exposed but who do not have symptoms. Tamiflu will not cure a cold.
Some people using Tamiflu have had the rare side effects of sudden confusion, shaking, speech problems, hallucinations (hearing or seeing things that are not there), or seizures (convulsions). It is not known whether oseltamivir was the exact cause of these symptoms.
Tamiflu is used to treat flu symptoms caused by the flu virus in patients with symptoms less than 2 days. It can also be given to prevent the flu in people who may be exposed but who do not have symptoms.
Before taking Tamiflu, tell your doctor if you have received a nasal vaccine within the last 2 weeks, or if you have kidney disease, heart disease, lung disease, or any other serious illness or health problem. Also tell your doctor if you have any condition that causes swelling or brain disorder.
Take Tamiflu as many days as have been prescribed to you, even if you begin to feel better. Your symptoms may begin to improve until the infection is completely cured.
Some people using Tamiflu have had the rare side effects of sudden confusion, delirium, hallucinations, unusual behavior, or self-harm. These symptoms are most common in children. It is not known whether this medicine is the exact cause of these symptoms. However, anyone using oseltamivir should closely monitor signs of confusion or unusual behavior. Call your doctor right away if you or your child using this medicine has any of these symptoms.
Tamiflu should not be used instead of receiving an annual shot from the flu. The Centers for Disease Control recommends taking flu shots every year to protect you from new strains of the flu every year.
