What is Ospemifene
Ospemifene is a new selective non-hormonal estrogen receptor modulator (SERM) that is used for the treatment of moderate to severe dyspareunia, a symptom of vulvar and vaginal atrophy, due to menopause. FDA approved on February 26, 2013.
Ospemifene mechanism of action
Ospemifene is a next generation SERM (selective estrogen receptor modulator) that selectively binds to estrogen receptors and either stimulates or blocks estrogen’s activity in different tissue types. It has an agonistic effect on the endometrium.

What is Osphena?
Osphena is a non-estrogenic drug that cancels certain changes in vaginal tissue caused by menopause. Osphena is used to relieve pain during intercourse in menopausal women. Ospemifene is not anesthetic.
Do not use Osphena if you are pregnant or may become pregnant. You should not use this drug if you have unusual vaginal bleeding, breast or uterus cancer, or a history of heart attack, stroke, or blood clot.
Osphena may increase the risk of endometrial hyperplasia, which can lead to uterine cancer. Immediately report your unusual vaginal bleeding to your doctor. Osphena may also increase the risk of developing a stroke or blood clot. Talk to your doctor about your individual risks.
