What is Pitavastatin

Pitavastatin a lipid-lowering agent that belongs to the statin class of medications for treatment of dyslipidemia. It is also used for primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease. FDA approved in Aug 3, 2009.

Pitavastatin mechanism of action

Pitavastatin is lipid-lowering agent that works to control the synthesis of cholesterol via competitive inhibition of the liver enzyme, 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase. As a result, a compensatory increase in LDL-receptor expression can be observed which facilitates an increase LDL catabolism.

What is Livalo?

Livalo refers to a group of drugs called HMG CoA reductase inhibitors, or “statins.” Pitavastatin reduces the level of “bad” cholesterol (low density lipoprotein or LDL) and triglycerides in the blood, while increasing the level of “good” cholesterol (high density lipoprotein or HDL).

Livalo is used to treat high cholesterol in adults. Lowering cholesterol can help prevent heart disease and hardening of the arteries, conditions that can lead to a heart attack, stroke, and vascular disease.

You should not take Livalo if you have liver disease (including abnormal liver enzyme tests), or if you also take cyclosporine.
