What is Sevelamer

Sevelamer is a phosphate binding drug used to prevent hyperphosphataemia in patients with chronic renal failure. When taken with meals, sevelamer binds to dietary phosphate and prevents its absorption. It is marketed by Genzyme under the trade name Renagel.

Sevelamer mechanism of action

Sevelamer prevents hyperphosphatemia by binding to dietary phosphate in the gut, preventing its absorption and thus decreasing serum parathyroid hormone levels.

What is Renvela?

Renvela is a phosphate binder. Renvela helps prevent hypocalcemia (low levels of calcium in the body) caused by elevated phosphorus. Renvela is used to control phosphorus levels in people with chronic kidney disease who are on dialysis.

You should not take Renvela if you have a bowel obstruction. Before taking Renvela, tell your doctor if you have severe constipation, a blockage in your intestines, stomach or intestinal disorders, problems with swallowing, or if you have recently had surgery on your stomach or intestines. Avoid taking any other medicines for 1 hour before or 3 hours after taking Renvela. Sevelamer can bind with other drugs and makes them less effective. Before taking this medicine, tell your doctor if you are taking Ciprofloxacin (Cipro), a medicine with a heart rhythm, or seizures. Do not take calcium or other mineral supplements without the advice of a doctor. Use only a certain type of calcium or mineral supplement recommended by your doctor.
