Sodium Chloride volume of distribution
Most clinicians recognize that while sodium is primarily restricted to the extracellular space it appears to distribute over total body water. However, the reason for this seeming paradox is not self-evident. The standard explanation is that the osmotic effect of added sodium draws water out of cells into the extracellular space. But is this the whole story? If so, one would predict that other solutes restricted to the extracellular space (eg, mannitol) would also appear to distribute over total body water.

What is Sodium Chloride
Sodium chloride, also known as salt, common salt, table salt or halite, is an ionic compound with the chemical formula NaCl, representing a 1:1 ratio of sodium and chloride ions. Sodium chloride is the salt most responsible for the salinity of seawater and of the extracellular fluid of many multicellular organisms. It is listed on the World Health Organization Model List of Essential Medicines.
Sodium Chloride mechanism of action
Our body cells are bathed in a watery fluid that contains primary sodium and chloride ions. These molecules play a vital role in maintaining proper fluid balance and keeping our tissues hydrated. Additionally, sodium is involved in many cell processes such as muscle contraction, transmission of nerve impulses, and kidney function. Chloride ions are responsible for maintaining the acid-base balance. To sustain life it’s very important to maintain these ions within a narrow therapeutic range.

Indication of Sodium Chloride
Sodium also plays a part in nerve impulses and muscle contractions. Sodium chloride is used to treat or prevent sodium loss caused by dehydration, excessive sweating, or other causes. Sodium chloride may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.
Toxicity of Sodium Chloride
Hypernatremia is a common electrolyte abnormality, but it is rarely attributable to excess sodium. Hypernatremia due to exogenous salt intake, caused either by accidental ingestion or as a form of child abuse, is rare, difficult to manage and results in high mortality. Although hypernatremia is easily recognized by laboratory tests, its etiology is often difficult to determine. A surprisingly small amount of salt intake can result in a fatal outcome. We report two cases of severe salt intoxication in two girls, aged 20 and 7 months, who presented with severe hypernatremia. Both had seizures after accidental salt ingestion.
