Senile dementia is a disease of the nervous system that occurs as a result of brain damage and manifests itself as a significant decrease in mental abilities. This acquired disease is manifested mainly in the elderly. The course of the disease depends on its cause and the general condition of the person. But all types of dementia are characterized by such manifestations as bad memory, reduced the ability to abstract thinking, learning and creative development – up to the complete collapse of the personality.
Treatment of mixed dementia is complex. It is primarily aimed at getting rid of the already existing disorders and stopping the progression of the disease that contributed to brain damage. In the treatment, first, they are engaged in normalizing blood pressure, prescribe statins and antiaggregants – drugs that counteract ischemia.
Medicines are prescribed depending on the stage of the disease and the severity of the disorders. To reduce the manifestations of dementia, funds are prescribed that affect brain activity – anticholinesterase drugs (based on galantamine, rivastigmine hydrotartranscelone and others) and memantine. They are used at all stages of dementia. They have a neuroprotective effect, prevent the destruction of neurons of the brain, and also improve the transmission of nerve impulses, contributing to improved memory and cognitive abilities.
To correct behavioral disorders, neuroleptics are prescribed, which reduce the manifestation of psychomotor agitation, delusions and deceptions of perception (based on quetiapine, haloperidol, olanzapine, etc.). These drugs should be prescribed in strict patient care, as they can cause various side effects.
Antidepressants are used to treat depression. This group includes drugs with active substance fluoxetine, mianserin, fluvoxamine maleate, etc. Do not forget about their careful use, since drugs can cause a headache, violation of heart rhythm, blood pressure jumps.
Patients with dementia often suffer from insomnia. Therefore, often an additional drug for patients are sleeping pills. Large doses of drugs can reduce the excitement, but it is important not to cross the line – with overdosage, the process of excitability of nerve cells is suppressed.
