Heartburn is a common symptom of diseases of the internal organs – the digestive system. The main cause of heartburn is gastroesophageal reflux, that is, throwing into the esophagus the contents of the stomach containing hydrochloric acid. Since the esophagus mucosa does not have such natural physiological protection as the gastric mucosa, its inflammation, manifested by burning in the chest, is accompanied by an acidic or bitter taste in the mouth.
Strong and frequently occurring heartburn is one of the main symptoms of gastritis reflux. Also, with such diseases as peptic ulcer, diabetes mellitus, diaphragmatic hernia, gastritis, heartburn often occurs.
There are several groups of means for heartburn, the safest category of antacids is recognized. These tablets are based on aluminum and magnesium since they can help in neutralizing the acid. Most people use baking soda when burning, but this is a fundamentally wrong approach. At the time of soda, the acid is quenched with alkali, but also contributes to the release of carbon dioxide in large quantities. Such gas influences as an irritant on the gastric mucosa and increases acid emissions.
Taking soda only provokes a relapse. That is why antacids are considered more effective, as the level of acidity is slowly reduced. The action of all drugs on this basis is the same. The difference is only in the price policy and the manufacturer. It is worth noting that aluminum, which is part of the preparations for heartburn, has a side effect in the form of constipation, and magnesium – diarrhea. Therefore, it is better to choose the hydroxide of these substances, then the consequences are minimal, although they are individual. In this regard, it is recommended to consult a gastroenterologist.
