Irritable bowel syndrome or IBS is a functional disruption of the bowel with traditional symptoms of the disorder: pain, spasms, flatulence, constipation and diarrhea. Functional disorders are characterized by a lack of laboratory confirmation of the disease, although the patient feels unwell. The disease was described in the middle of the nineteenth century, but at that time it was called mucosal colitis.
At the same time from a medical point of view, the person’s gastrointestinal tract is healthy. It is not affected by harmful microorganisms, fungi or viruses, is not inhabited by helminths, there are no tumors and other formations. In blood and stool tests, negative changes are also not detected. In other words, typical causes of such conditions cannot explain unpleasant symptoms. These disorders are related to functional medicine – that is, the problem does not form disease and does not lead to serious damage to health or death.
Use of medicines helps to reduce the symptoms of the disease. In the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome, the choice of drugs is affected by the prevalence of diarrhea, constipation or pain in a particular case.
