Normotimics – a group of drugs that differ in the mechanism of action, common for which is their clinical and pharmacological effectiveness, consisting in the stabilization of mood. They are used both for the treatment of affective disorders and for the prevention of relapses. Normotimics also can soften “acute angles of character”, irritability, intolerance, short temper, impulsiveness, dysphoria in patients with various mental disorders.
As normotimics, lithium preparations, carbazepine derivatives (carbamazepine and oxcarbazepine), valproate, lamotrigine are used. Common to these drugs is the need for strict medical monitoring of the patient’s condition.
Ideally, you should regularly monitor the concentration of these drugs in the blood. A sharp cessation of the intake of normotimics can lead to a rapid resumption of affective fluctuations. Given this, the abolition of preventive therapy is carried out gradually, within a few weeks.
Timisoleptics at the moment are increasingly used to improve mood. Initially, they were used only in the treatment of epilepsy to relieve convulsive syndrome. Next, this group of drugs began to be used to treat affective conditions, prolonged depression, to balance and stabilize mood and reduce acute angles during communication in case of a severe character in the patient.
