Prolactin is a hormone produced by the pituitary gland. Prolactin begins to circulate in the blood during puberty women, responsible for developing the breasts of girls. It is on his level that the size and shape of the breast depends. Together with progesterone and estrogen, the hormone is associated with the appearance of the menstrual cycle. Prolactin, adrenaline and cortisone are stress hormones.
Prolactin is produced in small amounts before menstruation, causing pain in the chest and increasing irritation. The increase in the hormone in the blood occurs during pregnancy.
Prolactin, responsible for the production of milk, is the “attachment hormone”, thanks to which a close relationship is established between the child and the mother. It is assumed that the presence of this hormone in the body of a woman is a factor that influences the emergence of the maternal instinct.
The presence of prolactin in the female body makes it difficult to conceive a child. The hormone is produced in the postpartum period, inhibits the menstrual cycle and acts as a natural contraceptive. It is for this reason that a woman during breastfeeding cannot become pregnant.
With a high level of prolactin, a woman’s libido decreases, menstruation is too poor or excessive, mood swings occur, and acne appears. An increased level of prolactin in the body of a woman is observed just before menstruation, during pregnancy, during lactation. In a woman who does not bear a child and does not breastfeed, an increased level of prolactin indicates the presence of a serious, undiagnosed disease.
