The Walmart Pharmacy chain’s NPS rating was 31% last year and was the highest in the industry. Walmart’s pharmaceutical business has reached nearly $ 18 billion. Today, the network – the leader in the sale of generics. The company also launched a number of drugs under its own brand.

At the beginning of its rapid development, the world’s largest retailer Walmart experimented a lot: it opened a network of automotive services in supercenters to provide simple services to customers — replacing tires, batteries and oil. Not wanting to let tenants into their territories and share with them a part of the profits, in the 80s the retailer began to develop a pharmacy chain, placing it in supercenters. At that time, the company had 300 stores and 16 pharmacies. Hundreds more shops leased space to other pharmacies. Over time, they changed their own. In the first 16 years, the company opened annually 150 new pharmacies.

A non-core business is always an “unknown land,” so difficulties at the start could not be avoided. As Charles Fishman writes in the book Walmart Effect, the retailer brought out two key components of the project’s success — price and people. When a new pharmacy opened, the manager hired the best pharmacist in the city and did not spare money for it.

The second component – the price, and the best, was and is the cornerstone in the philosophy of the founder of the company Sam Walton. “Sales cure all diseases. Sales cure all ills. What drives sales? A discount coupon of $5,” he said, and naturally, in his pharmacies he set the lowest prices in the city. However, in spite of everything, things went very slowly. Sam Walton was accustomed to quickly profit from his ideas, and the development of the pharmacy business worried him for a very long time with his unhurried return on investment – during the first five years the project was unprofitable. But perseverance and patience were soon rewarded.
